Which dwarf in Thorin's Company was first met by Bilbo?

The story behind the answer

Which dwarf in Thorin's Company was first met by Bilbo? The answer is Dwalin.

Dwalin is the first member of Thorin Oakenshield's company to arrive at Bilbo Baggins's home, Bag End. He enters after Gandalf has arranged the unexpected gathering and introduces himself with the formal phrase “Dwalin at your service,” immediately disrupting Bilbo's quiet evening.

The arrival order is an important detail in the opening chapter of The Hobbit. Balin arrives next, followed by the other Dwarves in groups, with Thorin arriving later. Their growing party overwhelms Bilbo's pantry and dining room before they explain their plan to travel to the Lonely Mountain.

Dwalin is the younger brother of Balin, another prominent member of the company. Both Dwarves had followed Thorin's family in earlier attempts to recover their homeland. Readers sometimes choose Balin because he is especially friendly toward Bilbo and later visits him after the quest, but Balin was not the first Dwarf at the door. Dwalin holds that distinction in Tolkien's novel.
