Which dwarf in The Hobbit is Gimli's father?

The story behind the answer

Which dwarf in The Hobbit is Gimli's father? The answer is Glóin.

Glóin is one of the thirteen Dwarves in Thorin Oakenshield's company, which sets out to reclaim Erebor and its treasure from Smaug. In Tolkien's wider legendarium, he is also the father of Gimli, the Dwarf who later joins the Fellowship of the Ring.

Glóin and Gimli belong to different generations of the story. Glóin appears prominently in The Hobbit, while Gimli is introduced in The Lord of the Rings at the Council of Elrond. Gimli had wanted to join his father's expedition to Erebor, but was considered too young at the time.

A common mix-up is confusing Glóin with other members of the company, especially Balin and Dwalin, who are brothers. Glóin is also related to Thorin's royal line through Durin's people, but he is not Thorin's son. The spelling “Gloin” is the same name without the usual accent mark.
