Which Dutch painter is known for Broadway Boogie Woogie?
Answer
Piet Mondrian
Answer
Piet Mondrian
The Dutch painter known for Broadway Boogie Woogie is Piet Mondrian. He completed the abstract oil painting in 1942–43 after moving to New York, where the city’s grid and music scene reshaped his visual language.
Broadway Boogie Woogie consists of small colored squares and rectangles arranged in a lively network of horizontal and vertical paths. Unlike Mondrian’s earlier compositions, which often use solid black lines separating blocks of primary color, this late work makes the lines themselves from adjoining colored units. The effect suggests movement, lights, traffic, and rhythm.
The title refers both to Broadway, the Manhattan avenue, and boogie-woogie, an African American blues-based musical style that Mondrian admired. The painting is therefore not a literal street scene, but an abstract translation of urban energy and musical syncopation.
Mondrian finished the work shortly before his death in 1944. It entered the Museum of Modern Art collection after being purchased by the Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins and later donated. Its companion, Victory Boogie Woogie, remained unfinished.
