Which Dutch painter is famous for his self-portraits and 'The Night Watch'?

The story behind the answer

Which Dutch painter is famous for his self-portraits and “The Night Watch”? Rembrandt, formally Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, is the artist described. Born in Leiden in 1606, he became one of the central painters of the Dutch Golden Age.

Rembrandt was celebrated for portraits, biblical scenes, history paintings, etchings, and drawings. His approximately 40 surviving self-portraits are especially important because they document his changing appearance and artistic development from youth through old age. He used dramatic light, expressive faces, and unusually direct poses rather than relying only on formal grandeur.

His 1642 militia painting is commonly called “The Night Watch,” although the title is misleading. The scene is not actually set at night; the dark appearance largely results from ageing and accumulated grime. It depicts a civic guard company in motion, led by Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch.

Another common mistake is assuming Rembrandt was only a painter. He was also a major printmaker, and his etchings helped spread his reputation across Europe. Despite later financial problems, his influence on portraiture, lighting, and narrative composition remained enormous.
