Eurythmics, the duo of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
Lennox provided the commanding vocals while Stewart shaped much of the duo’s songwriting, guitar work, and studio production. They became internationally prominent in the 1980s by blending synthesizers, drum machines, soul, rock, and art-pop into a distinctive sound. Their visual style, especially Lennox’s striking androgynous presentation, became central to their identity on MTV and television.
Their breakthrough came with “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” a song built around a memorable electronic riff and Lennox’s cool, forceful vocal. Other major songs included “Here Comes the Rain Again,” “Would I Lie to You?,” and “Missionary Man.” The pair’s work influenced later electronic pop while retaining strong links to soul and blues traditions.
The 2022 class also included Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, Eminem, Lionel Richie, and Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. Eurythmics is sometimes confused with Tears for Fears because both were major British 1980s acts, but the Lennox-Stewart partnership is the Hall inductee named here.
