Which Dunhuang manuscript collection was discovered sealed inside Cave 17 of the Mogao Caves?

The story behind the answer

The Dunhuang manuscripts are the collection discovered sealed inside Cave 17 of the Mogao Caves.

The manuscripts were hidden around the early eleventh century when the cave was closed and sealed. They include Buddhist scriptures, Christian and Manichaean texts, administrative records, contracts, letters, dictionaries, and literary works. Most date from the fourth through the eleventh centuries.

The collection is especially important because it preserves texts in Chinese, Tibetan, Sanskrit, Khotanese, Sogdian, and several other languages used across Inner Asia. The manuscripts illuminate religion, commerce, government, education, and everyday life along Silk Road networks.

Cave 17 is often called the Library Cave, but it was only one chamber within the Mogao complex. The manuscripts are not identical to the murals and statues of the caves, although the two bodies of evidence are studied together.
