Which Dublin church claims to hold the relics of Saint Valentine?

Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin claims to hold relics of Saint Valentine. More precisely, the shrine is in the Carmelite Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Whitefriar Street, also called Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church.

The relics were reportedly sent to Dublin in 1835 by Cardinal Carlo Odescalchi under the patronage of Pope Gregory XVI. They had previously been associated with the cemetery of Saint Hippolytus in Rome. The gift followed an impressive sermon preached in Rome by the Irish Carmelite John Spratt.

The shrine includes partial remains and a small vessel said to be tinged with Valentine’s blood. Worshippers, particularly around February 14, visit to pray for love or marriage. The wording “claims to hold” matters because several churches across Europe also claim to possess relics associated with Saint Valentine, whose identity and remains are historically complicated.

Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin Castle, and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral are prominent Dublin landmarks, but none is the church identified with this Valentine shrine.
