Which dub producer is known for his 'Blackboard Jungle' series?

The dub producer known for the “Blackboard Jungle” series is Lee “Scratch” Perry. His 1973 album with the Upsetters, commonly called “Blackboard Jungle Dub,” is a landmark in the early development of dub reggae.

The record was originally released in Jamaica under the name “Upsetters 14 Dub Blackboard Jungle” and was produced by Perry. It was created from instrumental versions of reggae tracks, emphasizing echo, reverb, stripped-back rhythms, and dramatic studio manipulation. The album is often described as one of the first fully realized dub albums and was initially pressed in only about 300 copies.

King Tubby was also closely involved: he engineered and mixed the sessions, which explains why some accounts associate the album with both producers. That collaboration does not change Perry’s status as the principal producer and the figure most strongly identified with the “Blackboard Jungle” releases. The “Blackboard Jungle” name is therefore more closely linked to Perry than to later dub innovators such as Scientist or Prince Jammy.
