Which drummer joined The Who after Keith Moon's death?
Answer
Kenney Jones
Answer
Kenney Jones
Kenney Jones joined The Who after Keith Moon’s death. The Faces and Small Faces drummer officially joined the band in November 1978, becoming the first permanent drummer to follow Moon.
Moon died on September 7, 1978, from an overdose of clomethiazole, a medication prescribed to help him manage alcohol withdrawal. The Who decided to continue, and Jones was chosen partly because he already knew the band members and had worked with Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle on the Tommy film soundtrack.
Jones did not attempt to imitate Moon’s famously explosive style. His steadier approach suited the band’s next phase, and he played on Face Dances and It’s Hard, as well as on the Quadrophenia film soundtrack. He also toured with The Who from 1979 through 1982.
Simon Phillips later toured with the group in 1989, while Zak Starkey became the long-term drummer for later reunions. Those later appointments can cause confusion, but Jones was the drummer who directly replaced Moon in the band’s immediate post-1978 lineup.
