Which driver won the first Indianapolis 500 run in August, in 2020?

Takuma Sato won the first Indianapolis 500 held in August, taking the postponed 2020 race on August 23. It was the 104th Running and Sato’s second Indianapolis 500 victory, following his 2017 win.

The race was originally scheduled for May 24, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway to move it to late summer. That made 2020 the first time the race was not held on or around Memorial Day in late May. The event also ran without spectators.

Sato drove for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and battled Scott Dixon for much of the closing stages. He passed Dixon during the final pit-stop sequence and took control of the race. A late crash involving Spencer Pigot brought out a caution, so the final laps were completed under yellow flags.

Sato finished ahead of Dixon and Graham Rahal. Marco Andretti, one of the listed alternatives, did earn pole position, but he did not win the race.
