Bilbo Baggins confronts Smaug in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Smaug is a powerful dragon who occupies the Lonely Mountain after driving the dwarves of Erebor from their kingdom. He guards the vast treasure hoard accumulated by the dwarves, including the Arkenstone, and becomes the central threat of the novel’s final part.
Bilbo enters the mountain as the dwarves’ burglar and speaks with Smaug rather than fighting him directly. During their conversation, Bilbo notices a vulnerable patch in the dragon’s armour-like hide. He later tells Bard about it, enabling Bard to use the Black Arrow against Smaug.
Glaurung and Ancalagon are dragons from Tolkien’s earlier First Age stories, while Scatha is another dragon associated with Middle-earth’s history.
