Which Dostoevsky novel is based on his experiences in a Siberian prison camp?

The story behind the answer

Dostoevsky’s novel based on his experiences in a Siberian prison camp is The House of the Dead.

The work was published in installments from 1860 to 1862. It presents the memoir-like account of Aleksandr Petrovich Goryanchikov, a nobleman sentenced to penal servitude after murdering his wife, although the narrator’s fictional identity gives Dostoevsky room to transform personal experience into literature.

Dostoevsky himself spent four years at hard labor in Omsk after his 1849 arrest and mock execution. The novel draws on the prison’s routines, forced labor, class tensions, punishments, and relationships among convicts.

English titles also include Notes from a Dead House and Memoirs from the House of the Dead. These refer to the same work, so title translations can cause confusion in quizzes and catalogs.
