Which Dostoevsky novel follows the brothers Dmitri, Ivan, and Alexei Karamazov?

The story behind the answer

The Brothers Karamazov follows the brothers Dmitri, Ivan, and Alexei Karamazov.

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s final novel was published in serial form from 1879 to 1880 in the literary journal The Russian Messenger. Its central family includes the passionate Dmitri, the intellectually skeptical Ivan, and the spiritually minded Alexei, usually called Alyosha. Their father, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, is a wealthy and morally corrupt landowner whose murder drives the novel’s major conflict.

The novel explores faith, doubt, free will, guilt, morality, and family relationships. A common mix-up is to identify Alyosha as the sole protagonist; although he is a central figure and the novel’s moral focus, the plot gives substantial attention to all three brothers and their father.

Dostoevsky died in 1881, shortly after the novel’s completion. The Brothers Karamazov is widely regarded as one of his major works and is often discussed alongside Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and Demons.
