Dostoevsky’s novel following Arkady Dolgoruky is The Adolescent.
The novel was first published in 1875 in the literary journal Notes of the Fatherland. Its Russian title, Podrostok, refers to a youth or adolescent, and the story is presented as Arkady’s autobiographical confession.
Arkady is the illegitimate son of Versilov, a wealthy landowner, and Sofia Dolgorukaya. He arrives in Saint Petersburg carrying a private ambition to become financially independent through the accumulation of wealth. His plans are complicated by family secrets, emotional conflicts, and the influence of Versilov.
The Adolescent is sometimes confused with Dostoevsky’s earlier Bildungsroman novels, especially The Idiot and Crime and Punishment. Unlike those works, it centers on a young narrator whose developing identity and social ambitions shape the entire narrative.
