Which Dostoevsky novel features Prince Valkovsky as a central antagonist?

The story behind the answer

Prince Valkovsky is a central antagonist in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel Humiliated and Insulted.

The novel was first published in 1861 and is also translated as The Insulted and Injured. Its plot combines romantic conflict, family suffering, social vulnerability, and moral manipulation. Prince Pyotr Valkovsky is portrayed as calculating and self-interested, using social position and emotional pressure to pursue his aims.

The story is narrated by the writer Ivan, who becomes involved in the troubled lives of Natasha Ichmenyeva, Alyosha Valkovsky, and the orphan Nellie. This structure gives the novel both a personal and a socially observant perspective.

Valkovsky is sometimes confused with antagonistic figures from Dostoevsky’s later novels, such as Nikolai Stavrogin in Demons. They belong to different books: Prince Valkovsky is specifically associated with Humiliated and Insulted.
