Which document officially ended the American Revolutionary War in 1783?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris officially ended the American Revolutionary War in 1783. Representatives of Great Britain and the United States signed it in Paris on September 3, 1783.

The treaty recognized the Thirteen Colonies as free, sovereign, and independent states. It also established broad boundaries for the new United States, including territory east of the Mississippi River, north of Spanish Florida, and south of British Canada.

The American negotiators were Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens. David Hartley signed for Great Britain. The agreement followed preliminary articles reached in 1782, after the military defeat of British forces and the collapse of Britain’s ability to continue the conflict in North America.

The Treaty of Paris is sometimes confused with the broader Peace of Paris, a group of agreements involving Britain, France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic. The American treaty itself is the document that formally recognized United States independence.
