Which document officially ended the American Revolutionary War by recognizing United States independence?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris (1783) officially ended the American Revolutionary War and recognized United States independence.

Representatives of Great Britain and the United States signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Britain acknowledged the former Thirteen Colonies as free, sovereign, and independent states. The agreement also established boundaries that extended the new nation west to the Mississippi River, north to the Great Lakes, and south to Spanish Florida.

The Treaty of Paris was part of the broader Peace of Paris, a group of agreements involving Britain, France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic. The treaty is sometimes confused with the 1763 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years’ War, or the 1783 Treaty of Versailles agreements involving other powers. Congress ratified the American treaty on January 14, 1784, completing the formal process of ending the war.
