Cinderella was the first Disney Princess to receive one of Disney’s modern theatrical live-action remakes, released in 2015.
Kenneth Branagh directed the film, with Lily James playing Cinderella, Cate Blanchett as Lady Tremaine, and Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother. It reimagined Disney’s 1950 animated Cinderella while also drawing on Charles Perrault’s older fairy tale, Cendrillon.
The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 13, 2015, and opened theatrically in the United States on March 13. Its success helped reinforce Disney’s strategy of revisiting animated classics in live action. Beauty and the Beast followed in 2017, Aladdin in 2019, and The Little Mermaid in 2023.
The wording refers to Disney’s theatrical remake cycle, not every live-action fairy-tale adaptation made by any studio. Earlier films such as Snow White adaptations existed, but they were not Disney remakes of the original animated Princess films. Cinderella is therefore the canonical answer among the listed choices.
