Which director made the 2001 film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?

The story behind the answer

Chris Columbus directed the 2001 film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The film was the first screen adaptation of a J.K. Rowling Harry Potter novel. It stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, with major supporting roles for actors including Richard Harris and Alan Rickman.

Columbus had previously directed family-oriented films such as Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire. His adaptation established the visual foundations of the film series, including Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, the Hogwarts Express, and the young trio’s screen identities.

The director returned for the second film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates directed later installments, which is why the first film’s director is sometimes mixed up with those of the sequels.
