John Galliano designed Dior’s 2000s “Rasta” collection inspired by Jamaican colors.
Galliano’s Dior collections frequently drew on travel, historical dress, popular culture, and dramatic visual themes. The Rasta-inspired work used the red, gold, and green color associations commonly connected with Rastafari imagery and Jamaican culture. It formed part of the highly theatrical design language of his period at Dior.
Galliano became Dior’s artistic director in 1996 and remained there until 2011. His collections often generated strong press attention because of their elaborate staging and references to global cultures.
The collection is associated with Galliano’s Dior tenure rather than with Dior’s earlier postwar designers. It is also distinct from the Dior Homme line, which was led by different designers and developed a separate menswear identity.
