Which dinosaur group includes Tyrannosaurus rex?

Tyrannosaurus rex belongs to the theropod group of dinosaurs.

Theropoda is a major dinosaur group whose members generally walked on two legs. It included meat-eaters such as Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus and Velociraptor, but the group was broader than predators alone: modern birds are living theropods.

T. rex was also more specifically a tyrannosaurid, within the subfamily Tyrannosaurinae. Those narrower groups include close relatives such as Tarbosaurus and Daspletosaurus. This is why “tyrannosaurs” and “theropods” are both associated with T. rex, but they are not interchangeable: every tyrannosaur is a theropod, while many theropods were not tyrannosaurs.

Tyrannosaurus lived in western North America during the late Maastrichtian Age, roughly 69–66 million years ago. Its massive skull, powerful hind limbs and two-fingered forelimbs made it one of the best-known and most specialized large theropods.
