Procter & Gamble launched the Tide detergent brand in the United States in 1946.
Tide was developed as a heavy-duty synthetic laundry detergent at a time when many households still relied on soap-based products. Its formulation was designed to clean heavily soiled clothes more effectively, particularly in hard water. The product was marketed with the slogan “America’s Washday Favorite” and quickly became one of Procter & Gamble’s most important brands.
Tide is often confused with Cheer or Gain because all three are major Procter & Gamble laundry brands, but they were introduced at different times and positioned differently. Tide’s original success helped establish synthetic detergents as a mainstream household category after the Second World War. The familiar orange package appeared later in the brand’s history; packaging, formulas, and product varieties have changed repeatedly as washing machines and consumer preferences evolved.
