André Courrèges introduced the 1964 Space Age collection featuring geometric minidresses and helmet-like hats.
Courrèges presented a futuristic vision built from clean lines, white surfaces, geometric shapes, and short silhouettes. His collection reflected widespread 1960s fascination with rockets, astronauts, science, and technological progress. White boots, goggles, and helmet-like headwear reinforced the space-travel theme.
Courrèges was also an important figure in the history of the miniskirt, although Mary Quant and other designers are associated with its popularization. Pierre Cardin and Paco Rabanne also explored futuristic fashion, which can cause attribution errors. Courrèges’s signature was the disciplined, architectural simplicity of his Space Age look rather than the metallic experimental materials most associated with Rabanne.
