Which designer created Christian Dior’s New Look collection launched in 1947?

The story behind the answer

Christian Dior created the New Look collection launched in Paris in 1947.

Dior presented his first haute couture collection on 12 February 1947 at 30 Avenue Montaigne. The collection’s most famous silhouette featured rounded shoulders, a narrow waist, a prominent bust, and a long, full skirt. Carmel Snow, editor of Harper’s Bazaar, reportedly called the look “New Look.”

The style contrasted sharply with the fabric restrictions and utilitarian clothing of the Second World War. Dior’s designs used large quantities of material, including fabric for voluminous skirts, which made them luxurious but controversial during postwar austerity.

The New Look did not mean every garment in the collection had an identical shape. It became a broad label for Dior’s return to pronounced femininity and couture glamour. Dior’s influence was immediate, and the house’s later designers continued to reinterpret his foundational silhouette.
