André Courrèges became famous for his 1964 Space Age collection of geometric, futuristic clothing.
Courrèges presented his “Space Age” collection in 1964, introducing a clean visual language built from short skirts, sharply cut trousers, geometric shapes, and white or metallic-looking materials. His work reflected the era’s fascination with modern technology, space exploration, and youth culture.
The designer trained as a civil engineer before entering fashion and worked at Balenciaga from 1950 to 1961. That background contributed to his precise construction and architectural approach to clothing. He established his own couture house with Coqueline Courrèges in 1961.
Courrèges is often discussed alongside Pierre Cardin and Paco Rabanne, who also explored futuristic fashion. Their work overlapped in period and mood, but Courrèges is particularly associated with the 1964 collection commonly identified as “Space Age.”
