The Libyan Desert is a broad geographical region in the northeastern Sahara. It extends from eastern Libya across Egypt’s Western Desert to far northwestern Sudan, making the three-country description a strong identifying clue. In Egypt, however, the same general area is commonly called the Western Desert, so the names describe overlapping but not always identical geographic conventions.

Much of the Libyan Desert consists of rocky hamada, sand plains, dunes, and enclosed depressions rather than continuous dunes. Oases such as Kufra, Jaghbub, Jalo, and Murzuk provided rare water sources and shaped historic travel, although the scarcity of wells made many routes exceptionally difficult.

The region also contains the Gilf Kebir plateau, Jebel Uweinat, major sand seas, and Libyan desert glass associated with an ancient impact event. During the Second World War, parts of it became a major theater of the Western Desert Campaign.
