The desert running along Namibia’s Atlantic coast is the Namib Desert.

The Namib is a coastal desert in southwestern Africa, extending primarily along Namibia’s Atlantic shoreline. In its broadest definition, it stretches for more than 2,000 kilometres through parts of Angola, Namibia, and northwestern South Africa. The desert is generally 50 to 160 kilometres wide, widening inland toward the Great Escarpment.

The cold Benguela Current keeps the nearby air cool and stable, limiting rainfall while producing frequent coastal fog. This fog is a vital water source for specially adapted organisms, including the fog-basking Namib darkling beetle. Rainfall varies sharply, from only a few millimetres in the driest coastal areas to more than 200 millimetres near the escarpment.

The Namib is frequently confused with the Kalahari Desert. The Namib lies beside the Atlantic Ocean and is characterized by fog, dunes, gravel plains, and extreme coastal aridity; the Kalahari is an inland semi-arid basin farther east. The Namib includes the spectacular Sossusvlei dunes and the protected Namib Sand Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
