Which desert plant is famous for producing only two continuously growing leaves during its lifetime?

The story behind the answer

Welwitschia mirabilis is the desert plant famous for producing only two continuously growing leaves during its lifetime.

Welwitschia mirabilis is native to the Namib Desert and nearby arid parts of Angola and Namibia. Its two strap-like leaves emerge from a short, woody stem and continue growing for decades. Wind, sand, animals, and splitting can make the leaves look like many tangled strips, but they originate as just two leaves.

The species is unusual in several other ways. It is a gymnosperm, so it is more closely related to conifers than to flowering plants. Welwitschia is dioecious: male and female reproductive structures occur on separate plants. Its deep taproot and broad leaf surface help it survive in a landscape where fog can be an important moisture source.
