Which desert is known for its circular patterns called 'fairy circles'?
Answer
Namib Desert
Answer
Namib Desert
The desert known for its circular patterns called “fairy circles” is the Namib Desert. These circles are barren, nearly round patches surrounded by taller grass, usually measuring several metres across.
They are especially common in Namibia’s arid grasslands, in a band stretching from southern Angola through Namibia toward South Africa. Scientists have proposed competing explanations, including termite activity and the self-organization of grasses competing for scarce water. Recent research has strengthened the vegetation-and-water explanation, but the subject remains scientifically debated.
The circles are not the same as fairy rings caused by fungi in temperate lawns. They are also not exclusive to Africa: similar formations have been reported in Western Australia, though researchers caution that visually similar patterns may have different causes. Local Himba traditions have associated the Namibian circles with spirits, gods, or the footprints of divine beings.
