The dunes rise dramatically from the surrounding hamada, a broad rocky desert surface, creating the landscape often associated with Sahara travel.

Some dunes at Erg Chebbi reach about 150 meters high, and the dune field extends roughly 28 kilometers north to south and 5–7 kilometers east to west. The area is famous for camel excursions, overnight desert camps, and sunrise and sunset views. A common mistake is to treat “Erg Chebbi” as a separate desert; it is a named dune region within the much larger Sahara.
