Which demon group torments the barrators in the fifth bolgia?

The story behind the answer

The demon group that torments the barrators in the fifth bolgia is the Malebranche.

In Inferno, the fifth bolgia is part of Malebolge, the eighth circle of Hell, where barrators—corrupt officials who traded public responsibilities for private gain—are submerged in boiling pitch. The sticky black substance symbolizes the secretive, hidden nature of their graft and dishonest dealings. The Malebranche guard the ditch and attack any sinner who surfaces, using hooks and barbs to drag them back down.

Dante and Virgil meet the demons in Cantos XXI–XXIII. Their leader, Malacoda, assigns a troop to escort the travelers, but the demons’ directions prove deceptive. One barrator, Ciampolo of Navarre, tricks them and escapes into the pitch, prompting a chaotic pursuit and a comic brawl among the devils.

The alternatives belong elsewhere in Dante’s Hell: centaurs guard the violent, harpies torment the suicides, and the Furies appear around the City of Dis. They are not interchangeable demon groups.
