Which declaration did Japan accept when it announced its World War II surrender in August 1945?

The story behind the answer

Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration when it announced its World War II surrender in August 1945.

The declaration was issued on July 26, 1945, by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. It demanded Japan’s unconditional surrender and outlined broad conditions for ending the war and governing Japan afterward.

The Soviet Union was not an original signatory because it was still neutral toward Japan when the declaration was issued. After joining the declaration, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan on August 8 and entered the war against Japanese forces in Manchuria.

Japan announced its acceptance on August 15, after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet entry into the war. The surrender instrument later formalized Japan’s agreement to the Allied terms.
