Its narrator, Vernon Little, is a troubled teenager in the fictional Texas town of Martirio, where he becomes entangled in the aftermath of a school shooting. The book uses black comedy, satire and deliberately abrasive contemporary speech to examine media sensationalism, fear and American culture.

The novel’s Booker victory made Pierre the third Australian-born author to win the prize, although he was living in Ireland when he received the award. The judges praised its energetic, sharply comic voice and described it as a powerful reflection of both anxiety about and fascination with America.

A common mix-up is the prize’s name: in 2003 it was officially called the Man Booker Prize, because the Man Group sponsored it. The award later reverted to the shorter Booker Prize name. Vernon God Little also won the 2003 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction and was adapted for the stage.
