Which day of Hajj is called Tarwiyah Day?

Tarwiyah Day is the 8th of Dhu’l-Hijja, the first major day of the Hajj rites.

On this day, pilgrims enter or renew the state of ihram, state their intention for Hajj and travel from Mecca to Mina. They spend the day there in prayer before moving onward the next morning to Arafat, where the central standing rite takes place on 9 Dhu’l-Hijja.

The name Tarwiyah is commonly connected with the Arabic root associated with providing or quenching thirst. Traditional explanations say pilgrims once prepared and carried water because Arafat lacked sufficient water supplies. The name therefore recalls the practical preparations made before the journey to Arafat.

Tarwiyah Day is not the day of Eid al-Adha. Eid begins on 10 Dhu’l-Hijja, after Arafah Day. The 12th and 13th are later days of the stoning rites, while 7 Dhu’l-Hijja is still before the formal Hajj sequence.
