Which day marked the first major sell-off of the 1929 Wall Street Crash?

The story behind the answer

Black Thursday marked the first major sell-off of the 1929 Wall Street Crash.

It occurred on October 24, 1929, when heavy selling caused a dramatic fall in share prices on the New York Stock Exchange. The market stabilized temporarily after leading bankers bought shares, but the intervention did not resolve the deeper weaknesses beneath the boom.

The crisis intensified on Black Monday, October 28, and Black Tuesday, October 29. On Black Tuesday, about 16 million shares changed hands, a record at the time. The collapse damaged confidence, reduced wealth, and helped deepen the economic contraction that became the Great Depression.

Black Thursday is sometimes mistakenly used for the entire 1929 crash, but it specifically refers to the first major panic day. The crash itself unfolded over several trading sessions and did not instantly create every feature of the Depression.
