Which day in 1929 is known as Black Tuesday, when U.S. stocks suffered a historic sell-off?
Answer
October 29, 1929
Answer
October 29, 1929
Black Tuesday, the historic U.S. stock-market sell-off, occurred on October 29, 1929.
The day came during the Wall Street Crash of 1929, after years of rising share prices and widespread margin borrowing. Investors had bought stocks with borrowed money, leaving the market vulnerable when confidence weakened. Selling accelerated in late October.
On October 24, later called Black Thursday, heavy trading overwhelmed the New York Stock Exchange. A temporary recovery followed, but selling returned on October 28 and intensified on October 29. About 16 million shares changed hands that day, a record at the time.
The crash did not by itself create every condition of the Great Depression, but it severely damaged confidence and helped expose weaknesses in banks, businesses, and household finances. Black Monday and Black Tuesday are separate events in the 1987 crash, so the dates should not be confused.
