Answer
October 29, 1929
Black Tuesday, the most famous single day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash, occurred on October 29, 1929.
On that Tuesday, investors sold roughly 16 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange. Prices plunged as confidence collapsed after months of heavy speculation, borrowing, and increasingly nervous trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell about 12%, making the day one of the defining moments in financial history.
The crash did not by itself create every hardship of the Great Depression. Economic weakness, bank failures, falling industrial production, and reduced consumer spending also played major roles. The crash did, however, intensify fear and damaged public confidence in the American economy.
A common mix-up is Black Thursday, October 24, 1929, when an earlier wave of panic selling struck. Black Tuesday was later and more severe in its symbolic impact. The Dow did not regain its September 1929 peak until 1954.
