Which date is known as Black Thursday, the day the 1929 Wall Street crash began its dramatic sell-off?

The story behind the answer

Black Thursday, the day associated with the dramatic opening of the 1929 Wall Street crash, was October 24, 1929.

On that Thursday, heavy selling hit the New York Stock Exchange and trading volume reached a then-record level. A group of leading bankers bought shares in an attempt to restore confidence, and prices temporarily stabilized. The rescue effort did not end the wider crisis, however, and selling intensified again in the following week.

Black Monday occurred on October 28, followed by Black Tuesday on October 29. These labels are sometimes blended together in popular accounts, but they identify separate trading days in the same crash. The market's eventual decline unfolded over a longer period than the famous week alone.

The 1929 crash is commonly linked with the onset of the Great Depression, although the relationship was complex. Banking failures, falling demand, debt, deflation, and policy decisions helped turn a stock-market collapse into a prolonged international economic crisis.
