Which date is India’s Independence Day, marking independence from British rule in 1947?

The story behind the answer

India celebrates Independence Day on August 15, marking its independence from British rule in 1947.

The Indian Independence Act 1947 created the independent dominions of India and Pakistan. Jawaharlal Nehru became India’s first prime minister, and his famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech was delivered shortly before the transfer of power.

The central national ceremony takes place at the Red Fort in Delhi. The prime minister raises the national flag, addresses the country, and reviews a ceremonial program. Across India, schools, public institutions, and communities hold flag ceremonies and cultural events.

India’s Republic Day is a separate holiday on January 26. It commemorates the date the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950, so it should not be confused with the August independence anniversary.
