Algeria’s Independence Day is 5 July, marking the end of French colonial rule in 1962.
Algeria became independent on 5 July 1962 after the Algerian War and the March 1962 Évian Accords. A referendum on self-determination held in Algeria on 1 July produced an overwhelming vote for independence, and France recognized the result.
The date also carries historical symbolism because France captured Algiers on 5 July 1830, beginning its conquest of Algeria. Thus the 1962 anniversary is associated both with the end of colonial rule and with the date French control began.
The war lasted from 1954 to 1962 and involved the National Liberation Front, the French state, and other armed and political groups. Algeria’s Independence Day is distinct from Revolution Day, observed on 1 November to remember the 1954 uprising.
