Which Danish patron helped support Hans Christian Andersen’s education and early career?

The story behind the answer

Jonas Collin was the Danish patron who helped support Hans Christian Andersen’s education and early career.

Collin was a senior official and director connected with the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. He encountered Andersen after the young man arrived in Copenhagen hoping to become an actor. Recognizing his talent but also his lack of formal education, Collin helped arrange financial assistance and educational opportunities.

Andersen attended schools in Slagelse and later Elsinore, where he received the schooling needed to prepare for university-level study. Collin’s family also became important to Andersen socially and emotionally. His son Edvard Collin remained one of Andersen’s closest acquaintances, although their relationship was sometimes strained.

Jonas Collin should not be confused with King Frederick VI, who also supported Andersen financially. Collin was the influential patron and administrator who played a practical, personal role in shaping the writer’s early path.
