Harald Bluetooth Gormsson ruled Denmark from about 958 to 986 and is traditionally credited with consolidating Danish control over much of Jutland and Zealand. He was the son of Gorm the Old and Thyra Dannebod, and succeeded his father as Denmark moved from pagan traditions toward Christianity.

Harald’s conversion is described differently by medieval writers. One famous account says the cleric Poppo proved Christian faith by carrying heated iron without being burned; another says Harald accepted Christianity after conflict or negotiations with the Holy Roman Empire. The details are disputed, but Harald clearly promoted Christianity and had his parents’ remains moved into a church at Jelling.

The Jelling Stones are the key monument associated with his reign. Their inscription says Harald won all Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian. A common mix-up is Harald Fairhair, who belongs chiefly to Norway’s unification tradition, while Bluetooth is the Danish king linked with the Jelling monument and Denmark’s conversion.
