Hans Christian Andersen was born on the Danish island of Funen.
Andersen was born in Odense, the principal city of Funen, on 2 April 1805. Funen lies between the Danish mainland and Zealand, and Odense’s setting, traditions, and local stories remained part of the author’s biography even after he moved to Copenhagen.
Today, Odense presents itself as Andersen’s hometown and maintains museums, statues, childhood sites, and cultural attractions connected with him. The city’s relationship with Andersen is unusually prominent because his early life there became central to the public story of his rise from poverty to international fame.
Funen should not be confused with Zealand, the island containing Copenhagen, where Andersen spent much of his adult life. Nor is Odense located on Jutland, Denmark’s mainland peninsula. These geographic distinctions help explain the two places most associated with Andersen: his birthplace on Funen and his literary home in Copenhagen.
