Which curry name literally means two onions?
Answer
Dopiaza
Answer
Dopiaza
The curry name that literally means “two onions” is Dopiaza.
The name comes from Persian and Urdu roots: du means “two,” while piyāz means “onion.” The dish is associated with using onions in two stages—cooked into the gravy and added raw or fried later as a garnish.
Dopiaza has links to Mughlai cuisine and appears in records from the 16th century. A recipe attributed to Abul Fazl’s Ain-i-Akbari used a substantial quantity of onions alongside meat and spices such as pepper, cardamom, cloves, coriander and cumin.
A popular legend credits the fictional courtier Mulla Do-Piyaza with inventing it accidentally, but that story is not reliable history. Dopiaza is also not one fixed recipe: versions across Iran, Afghanistan and South Asia may use lamb, chicken, potatoes or different onion preparations.
