Answer
Ukrainian hryvnia
Answer
Ukrainian hryvnia
The Ukrainian hryvnia was introduced in Ukraine in 1996 to replace the karbovanets.
Ukraine launched the hryvnia on 2 September 1996 during a major monetary reform. The new currency helped establish a stable national monetary system after the country had used temporary karbovanets notes following independence from the Soviet Union. The name comes from the hryvnia, a historical weight of silver and a monetary term used in medieval Kyivan Rus’.
One hryvnia is divided into 100 kopiykas. Banknotes depict prominent Ukrainian historical and cultural figures, including Volodymyr the Great, Lesya Ukrainka and Ivan Franko. The currency is sometimes transliterated as “hryvnya,” but “hryvnia” is the common English form. It should not be confused with the Russian ruble or Belarusian ruble, which are separate national currencies.
