Which currency replaced the Venezuelan bolívar fuerte in Venezuela in 2018?

The story behind the answer

The Venezuelan bolívar soberano replaced the bolívar fuerte in Venezuela in 2018.

Venezuela introduced the bolívar soberano on 20 August 2018 during a major monetary reform. The reform removed five zeros from the bolívar fuerte, so 100,000 bolívares fuertes became one bolívar soberano. The change was intended to simplify transactions during a period of extreme inflation.

The soberano was Venezuela’s official currency until another redenomination in 2021, when the digital bolívar replaced it and removed six additional zeros. The currency name ultimately honors Simón Bolívar, the South American independence leader.

Because several Venezuelan currencies have carried the name bolívar, dates and qualifiers matter. Bolívar fuerte, bolívar soberano and digital bolívar refer to different monetary stages, not interchangeable names for one unchanged unit.
