Which currency is used in India?

The story behind the answer

The currency used in India is the Indian rupee.

The rupee has a long history in South Asia, and its name derives from the Sanskrit word rūpya, meaning “wrought silver” or “silver coin.” The 16th-century ruler Sher Shah Suri is widely associated with establishing a standardized silver rupee that influenced later monetary systems in the region.

India’s modern rupee is divided into 100 paise, although paise are rarely used in everyday cash transactions because of their low value. The Reserve Bank of India issues most banknotes, while the Government of India issues coins. The rupee’s ISO 4217 code is INR, and its symbol is ₹.

Several neighboring countries also use currencies called rupees, including Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius. These are separate currencies with different ISO codes and exchange values, so “rupee” alone does not identify India’s currency in international markets.
