Which currency is the official money of the United Arab Emirates?

The story behind the answer

The official currency of the United Arab Emirates is the United Arab Emirates dirham.

The dirham was introduced in 1973, shortly after the United Arab Emirates was formed in 1971. It replaced the Qatar and Dubai riyal, which had circulated in the emirates before the federation established a common currency. The name dirham comes from the Greek drachma through Arabic monetary history.

The dirham is divided into 100 fils and is issued by the Central Bank of the UAE. Its ISO code is AED. The currency is commonly written as “dh” or “Dhs” in everyday prices, while international financial systems use AED. It is distinct from the dirhams of Morocco and Jordanian historical usage, and from nearby currencies called riyal or rial.
