Which currency is issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and is divided into 100 cents?

The story behind the answer

The Sri Lankan rupee is issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and is divided into 100 cents.

Sri Lanka used the rupee after the island became a British colony, and the currency continued after independence. The Central Bank of Ceylon, now the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, began operations in 1950 and became the country’s principal monetary authority.

Sri Lankan banknotes and coins use the country’s major scripts: Sinhala, Tamil and English. This distinguishes the currency visually from other rupees used across South Asia. The ISO 4217 code for the Sri Lankan rupee is LKR.

The rupee is often confused with India’s currency because both share a historical name and are divided into 100 smaller units. They are not interchangeable: each is issued by a different central bank and has a separate national monetary system.
