Azerbaijan introduced the manat on 15 August 1992, while the Soviet ruble continued circulating temporarily alongside it. The manat became the country’s sole legal tender on 1 January 1994. The currency is issued by the Central Bank of Azerbaijan and has the ISO 4217 code AZN in its current form.

A major redenomination took effect on 1 January 2006. One new manat replaced 5,000 old manats, and the new currency used the symbol ₼. The reform was intended to simplify accounting and restore confidence after the high inflation and monetary instability of the 1990s.

The word “manat” is related to “moneta,” a term with roots in coin and money. Azerbaijan shares the name with Turkmenistan, which also uses a manat, but the two currencies are separate and have different ISO codes.
